Studying the subpixels
Putting a display under the microscope to understand why some screens just look right.

Two displays with identical resolutions can feel completely different, and the reason lives below the pixel. I spent a weekend with a macro lens and a test pattern to find out why.

Subpixel layouts, dithering tricks and panel coatings all bend the rules of what a pixel even is. These notes document the patterns I found and what they mean for choosing a panel.
